On the fourth Friday of every month, from February to November, enjoy the sounds of local talent at the Mansion. This free event features music from classical to contemporary, from brass to Broadway -- all set in the unbeatably beautiful surroundings of this architectural gem.
As well as co-founding what was to become the largest zinc smelting operation in the United States, Edward Hegeler launched Open Court Publishing to foster the discussion of philosophy, science, and religion. He and his wife, Camilla Weisbach Hegeler, commissioned W. W. Boyington to design their 52 room Mansion and employed August Fiedler to design its interior. Their daughter, Mary Hegeler, married Dr. Paul Carus, editor of Open Court Publishing, and they raised their six children in the Mansion. The Mansion was a hub of intellectual thought and cultural activities as these families grew.

"Play Ball," 1858 Style Interactive Cricket Game
Aug. 23, 2008 - Aug. 23, 2008 , 10 a.m. & 4 p.m.
"Play Ball," 1858 Style: Life in Illinois at the time of the Lincoln-Douglas debates was very different from today, and this was also the case with the sports people played. Many of the games the people in Illinois play today--football, basketball, baseball--were not around in 1858. By the same token some people at that time enjoyed sports that are no longer played today, and one of these sports was the
venerable old English game of cricket,
which had been brought to the United
States during the colonial era and, by
1858, could be found in many areas of
the country, even Illinois.Visitors to this year's Lincoln-Douglas debate sesquicentennial at Ottawa will have an opportunity to personally relive this aspect of 1858 life by joining in the short, informal, 19th c. cricket games that American cricket player
and author Tom Melville will be conducting on August 23.The games will be run on a continuous walkup basis from 10 to 4 and are open to everyone. Absolutely no experience required! So come and discover what "play ball" meant to the people of Illinois 150 years ago. Event Type: Sports.

The Abe We Know Now: Abraham Lincoln in Contemporary Theatre and Popular Culture
Sep. 13, 2008 - Sep. 13, 2008 , 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm
This multimedia presentation examines contemporary appearances of the beloved stovepipe-hatted president in unlikely places: musicals, Pulitzer Award-winning plays about card hustlers by playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, episodes of The Simpsons, and in ads for sleep medications. Just how does Lincoln's legacy play out for artists and audiences now? What is the relationship between recent historical findings and new representations of Abraham Lincoln? And, how do these representations shape our perceptions of Lincoln's legacy?
Jennifer Shook is the Artistic Director of Caffeine Theatre, where she recently directed Seamus Heaney's The Cure at Troy, Lorca's Do?a Rosita, and Eliot's The Cocktail Party. She teaches dramaturgy and theatre history at Columbia College Chicago and holds degrees from the University of Chicago, Swathmore College, and University College Galway. Jennifer has spoken for a variety of audiences with topics ranging from modernist poetry to folklore and from Ibsen to Guantanamo.
